LV-IMC Tech Collective Mission Statement (Who we are and What we do and don?t do)

The Las Vegas Independent Media Center (LV-IMC) Tech Collective is the group of folks responsible for maintaining the technology related to LV-IMC. Some of the participants involved with the collective know more about computers and other related technology and others know less. Some participants of the collective don?t know or care about technology, don?t know how to use e-mail, couldn?t stop the 12:00 flash on a VCR yet all of us, techno-skilled or not, want to stay connected and informed about all parts of the LV-IMC project.

We hold regular meetings so that those interested in learning more about the technological side of the LV-IMC project have a place to ask questions and make comments. We do this because we believe in the importance of the IMC project and recognize how important the technological side of the project is to its success as a whole, i.e. it?s important to have a website and we need as many people as possible to know how to maintain, change, and fix it.

  • We do NOT make non-technical editorial or site graphic design decisions.
  • We do NOT determine where graphics are placed on the site.
  • We do NOT decide whether or not we should change colors, fonts (the way the letters look) or pictures.
  • We do NOT proofread or edit the words within articles.
  • We do NOT create fliers and other outreach material.
  • We do NOT make decisions about how to or not to spend money.

Our direction comes from the other LV-IMC collectives and working groups. There are some things that we are not going to be able to implement exactly as presented, because some things are not technologically possible at this time.

We are responsible for:

  • Changing the coding (the programming language the computers read in order to put our ideas on the screen) when coding needs to be updated and/or changed.
  • Teaching others how to use, create and modify the LV-IMC website.
  • Providing instruction on audio, video, photography, Internet distribution and any other communication medium.
  • Keeping LV-IMC informed of new technology.
  • Representing LV-IMC within the global IMC tech community.

Our main goal is to enable everyone to become effective media producers.
