America Votes(.org) Legitimacy in Question
by Joe Sacco

On Thursday, September 23, 2004, at least one group of individuals is making voter registration difficult for some, depending on party affiliation.
America Votes claims to be a non-partisan political organization working to register voters. According to their official website, they are part of a coalition with AFL-CIO, America Coming Together (ACT), and other political organizations.
Surprisingly, a number of AMERICA VOTES field representatives were at UNLV's campus today asking "If the election were held today, would you vote Republican or Democrat?" An answer of "Democrat" assured a response of non-compliance. They actually refused to register people whom responded "Democrat". On the contrary, if a person were to say they would support the Republican party/candidate, the representatives would then kindly register the person.
On-foot voter-registration workers are questioning political party affiliation, ultimately discriminating against Democrats and 3RD PARTY supporters. These people are clearly inhibiting democracy while enabling more partisan-based corruption within the US voting process.
It's Illegal !

I just wanted to add it is also illegal for these groups to refuse to register some voters just bcuz of party affiliation. Someone should let the Democratic Party know.........

It was my comprehension that vote registration is suppoesedly NON- partisan. Did some law change and alter that? In y opinion, campus voter registration groups should regsister ALL regardless of their political persuasion!

Another bizarre situation from the political frontlines... Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm speaking (and speculating) from a standpoint of complete ignorance here, but was America Votes an organization that may have first been contracted by the Nader organization to get people to support Nader on the NV ballot -- and now, once that mission has been accomplished, its minions are registering Republicans and denying Democrats?
If the above is true, I would have this to say: Oh! My! What a surprise!!
If my speculation isn't true, please ignore it.

Hey folks, these people registering voters under the name "America Votes" are not with the organization America Votes. I should know as I am the only emplyoee of America Votes in Nevada . These individuals are a group of people trying to mask their identity and hide their motives.
America Votes does not hide the fact that we are a new coalition of many of the largest progressive membership-based groups in the country, who have come together to increase voter registration, education and participation in electoral politics.
Our member groups participte in voter registration activites legally and take voter registration fraud very seriously.
And folks if you are not already volunteering with an organization to educate, register, and turn out voters you should contact me. We need to increase voter participation legally and legitmately.

Well, if there are ppl claiming they're with America Votes and they're not, and they're using that as part of their pitch, then they're committing fraud and ALSO, whatever signatures they're amassing are suspect and challengeable. I was on the UNLV campus about 3 days ago and a male person held up a clip-board and aggressively approached me saying he "works for America votes". I declined his pitch. Another day (last Sat or Sun), a different male (blond) with a clip board and a Bush 2004 button, standing in almost the same place, didn't ask me to sign anything but asked where the nearest restroom was. This was near the Alumni Association building.
