Granted, the darker you are, the more hell you're statistically likely to catch from white supremacists, since their worst fear is that Human civilization will somehow collapse if there aren't enough natural blondes and redheads in the world to create new things (as if the only inventors in history have been white--hey, I never said these people were rational or even intellectual).

Blacks and Latinos have a common enemy: Those who fear global, ethnic miscegenation so much, they'll either pass laws or even end/ruin lives in order to force the future into resembling Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver (might as well ask Mandela to go BACK to jail!).

We need to somehow (the debate still rages as to exactly "how") obligate the rich and the powerful to create a series of eco-friendly jobs. Imagine if Greenpeace were in charge of FDR's New Deal. Imagine if EVERY business was as ethical as Ben & Jerry's originally was ...

We have the CIA, the war on drugs (or for oil), nuclear proliferation and the School of the Americas to abolish--we don't have time to feud amongst ourselves. And how do whites prove they're on our side? Simple: by helping us while turning against white supremacy!

I love and respect swarthy people myself! I save a lot of money hiring them to do dirty work on my estate in San Simeon. Sure beats cowtowing to a bunch of union commies like Teamster Local # 631!

It's been said that Star Wars is for right-wingers in the sense that, within its mythos, conflict is the thing (how many times have I heard folks say the first two were too political and lacked fight scenes?!). And it's clear that the two inbreds (not Rilea, he's cool, I meant Priestly and Hearst's monkey asses) who just wrote in can only think in terms of conflict. I bring all this up because often times, the way in which one looks at life, the universe and everything will reveal where one stands politically. If folks see life as being filled with conflict, then they'll act, vote and invest (or divest) accordingly. If folks see life as being something beautiful; something to be cherished and celebrated, again, their votes and investments will reflect that as well.

If you "think" the odds of another 9-11 are just that great (ask any mathematician who ain't on the take how wrong that one is), then you won't mind half of our taxes going toward the military-industrial complex every year. However, that in and of itself is the primarily reason why there has yet to be a Greenpeace version of FDR's New Deal (and given how fucked up our environment is, they'll be plenty of clean up work for both the trailer parks and the barrios, so don't stress about jobs, y'all). And if you're ignorant enough to think there's such a thing as "Human nature", then you're not likely to be investing in Humans since they're supposedly, naturally evil or whatever the libertarians are claiming, now are you?

All drugs need to be decriminalilzed, period. And if all businesses were worker-owned, everyone would have a job because no one is going to masochistically vote to fire themselves!

Besides, even if we WERE to hypothetically close the borders and Mexico were to then share its wealth and provide free health care, college, etc., so that no one would be tempted by the so-called First World ever again, the CIA would immediately go in and treat whoever was in charge of Mexico at the time the same, exact way Lumumba was treated in the Congo in 1960 or the way the Big Three treated Preston Tucker: Six in one hand, half a dozen in the fucking other. To Mr. "Hearst", it's interesting that you use that particular name, however slightly mis-spelled, as a psuedonym.

The actual Mr. Hearst started his newspaper publishing career as something of a populist and advocate for the working man, albeit not being above the use of yellow journalism to push causes, like the American invasion of Cuba in 1898, that he believed in.

But, it was his stances on Asian, specifically Chinese and Japanese, immigration and residence in California, starting in the early 1900's, as well as his sympathy for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in the 1930's, that have placed him in the rather ignominious historical position he occupies to-day.

Mind, his positions on these issues were not his solely, as they were shared by quite a number of European-Americans at the time.

However, simply because his positions were held by a number of his contemporaries , many of whom had been influenced by what Hearst's newspapers had to say about them, doesn't justify them in the slightest.

Ultimately, between those positions, as well as his well-known fling with actress Marion Davies(whom, it could be argued, was hurt far more professionally and personally by her association with Mr. Hearst than the other way 'round), William Randolph Hearst ended his life as rather something of a national laughing-stock.

A rich one, yes. But, then, riches aren't everything, as you know.

Finally, to Messrs Priestly and "Hearst", what do your responses have, if anything, to do with the issues originally presented?????

Lynching Lessons

WHAT DOES ALL THAT MEAN? IT MEANS HE KNOWS A LOT MORE THAN SOMEONE WHO'S GOTTEN BY THUS FAR SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HOW POPULAR/CHARISMATIC HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL!

On June 13, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution apologizing for its failure to adopt federal anti-lynching legislation, first proposed 105 years ago at a time when lynchings were a frequent occurrence. In the first half of the 20th century, several hundred anti-lynching laws were filed in Congress, and three were passed by the House of Representatives, but the Senate -- controlled by Southern Democrats, who used the filibuster -- consistently refused to adopt the law. One of the most powerful was Richard Russell (D-Georgia), whose name now adorns the Senate office building where the resolution was crafted.

What is outrageous is that 20 Senators initially declined to cosponsor the resolution, drafted by Sen. Mary Landreiu (D-Louisiana). Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) insisted on a voice vote, rather than a roll call vote, to avoid forcing members to put themselves on record. Even so, pressure from constituents pushed seven additional Senators to add their names as co-sponsors after the vote was taken.

Thirteen Republicans -- including Trent Lott and Thad Cochran from Mississippi, the state with the most lynchings - continued to avoid joining the list of cosponsors. (The other holdouts include Lamar Alexander [TN], Robert Bennett and Orrin Hatch [Utah], John Cornyn [TX], Michael Crapo [Idaho], Michael Enzi and Craig Thomas [Wyoming], Chuck Grasley [Iowa], Judd Gregg and John Sununu [NH], and Richard Shelby [Alabama]). Even today, it seems, lynching remains controversial.

in September 1946. Paul Robeson -- actor, singer and all-around Renaissance man -- had tag-teamed with Albert Einstein and other activists to pressure President Harry Truman into pursuing anti-lynching legislation. Inside the Oval Office, Robeson tried to read a prepared statement when Truman rudely interrupted him. The Democratic president said he was concerned about lynching -- but the time wasn't quite right for the passage of federal legislation because it'd alienate Southern Democrats. Robeson's response to this was best described in Martin Duberman's definitive biography on Robeson:
"Robeson -- who later told reporters he had felt it was important to be polite, but not 'excessively polite' -- said that if the federal government refused to defend its black citizens against murder, blacks would have to defend themselves. Truman declared the interview at an end." (Keep in mind this was 20 years before the formation of the Black Panther Party in Oakland. Robeson was a prophet.) Also in 1946, Henry A. Wallace -- FDR's vice president and Truman's secretary of commerce -- became increasingly vocal about the Faustian and Machiavellian way America dealt with Stalinism. Truman then 86ed Wallace from the presidential cabinet, prompting Wallace to run against Truman in 1948 under the banner of the Progressive Party -- a lost cause Robeson nonetheless supported.

AND NOW, BACK TO THE SHOW ...

The Senate resolution is purely a symbolic act, but if it reminds us of the horrors of racial hatred and helps us address contemporary forms of bigotry, it will have served its purpose. What lessons should we learn from the sordid history of lynching in America?

Many news reports of the Senate' s action noted that there were 4,732 recorded lynchings between 1882 and 1951, although there were certainly many undocumented lynchings before and during that period [JUST AS THE DOCUMENTARY SHOAH HELPED JEWS EXPOSED THE HOLOCAUST, A SIMILAR WORK SHOULD BE DONE TO GET AN EXACT DEATH TOLL OF HOW MANY BLACKS DIED BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS JUST THAT FUCKING AFRAID OF A TIGER WOODS/HALLE BERRY/LENNY KRAVITZ LOOKING GRANDCHILD]. Most of the recorded lynchings occurred before 1930. The vast majority of lynchings took place in the South and the border states, although lynchings were not unknown in the North and Midwest, too. Three-fourths of the victims were black.

Missing from most recent news accounts of the Senate's apology are the underlying social conditions that led to most lynchings and the resulting fluctuations in lynchings.

Between 1880 and 1930, 2805 people - 2500 of them black - were killed by lynch mobs in the 10 southern states. According to Stewart Tolnay and E.M. Beck's authoritative study, A Festival of Violence: An Analysis of Southern Lynchings, on average, "a black man, woman, or child was murdered nearly once a week, every week" during those years by a white lynch mob.

But the number of lynchings each year fluctuated widely, highly correlated with the price of cotton. Low cotton prices -- an indication of poor economic conditions -- led to an increase in lynchings. When economic conditions improved, lynchings declined.

This suggests that while most Southern whites -- especially rural farmers and workers -- held racist beliefs, they did not always act on these beliefs through mob violence. Economic hard times brought out the worst in these people, pushing them to act out their frustrations.

Obviously, the victims of lynchings were not responsible for the value of cotton or the general level of business activity. In that way, lynching was an irrational act, a form of scapegoating, not unlike the way the German people vented their frustrations by vilifying and killing Jews when their country was thrown into economic depression in the 1930s.

Most lynchings took place in small towns and isolated [ISOLATED, AS IN IGNORANT, NOT INNOCENT, GODDAMN IT] rural communities, characterized by widespread poverty and illiteracy [ILLITERACY, SEE?]. Participants in lynch mobs were typically sharecroppers, tenant farmers and common laborers. Their economic position was similar to that of African Americans.

Of course, most people who joined lynch mobs were probably unaware of the underlying conditions that triggered their behavior. Rather than blame general economic conditions or specific people and institutions with economic power, they justified their actions by pointing to the behavior of blacks, especially violations of racial manners. Lynchings were often triggered by a rumor of a sexual offense such as rape (typically unfounded) by a black man against a white woman [THE PRICE OF LIBERTY IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE AND WHEN YOU FORGET HISTORY IT REPEATS ITSELF, SIMPLE. THAT GOES FOR THE FEAR OF MISCEGENATION TOO; DOESN'T JUST APPLY TO THE HOLOCAUST OR THE TRAIL OF TEARS, YA KNOW] or by other offenses which whites interpreted as blacks not "knowing their place," such as insulting a white person, trying to vote, murder, or stealing.

Back then, rural southern white society was divided into two major classes -- the dominant planters and major employers, and the class of day laborers, sharecroppers, and tenant farmers. The planters and big employers depended on cheap white and black labor. When economic conditions worsened, poor whites felt threatened by competition from even cheaper black labor. At the time, groups like the Farmers Alliance were trying to mobilize a coalition of white and black laborers and tenant farmers to regulate the banks and railroads that were gouging small farmers. But racial fears and violence undermined the Southern Populist movement. By identifying with the ideology of white supremacy and segregation, most poor Southern whites chose to form political alliances around race rather than class lines.

Most upper-class and middle-class Southern whites, and most white politicians, condoned lynching as a form of maintaining the racial hierarchy [SAY ANARCHISTS, HOW DO Y'ALL FEEL ABOUT HIERARCHIES?]. Although the white elite may not have directly participated in most lynchings, they benefitted from them [IN OTHER WORDS, THE KINGPIN DIDN'T KILL ELEKTRA; THE KINGPIN HIRED BULLSEYE TO KILL ELEKTRA ... GRASP THE CONCEPT AND QUIT TRYING TO HELP GREAT POWER DUCK GREAT RESPONSIBILITY, YOU LIBERTARIAN/IMPERIALIST-APOLOGIST FUCKS!!!].

The number of lynchings peaked at 230 in 1892, which coincided with a dramatic softening in demand for southern cotton. The bloody 1890s were followed by several years of rising cotton prices and a decline in violence against southern blacks. Following World War One, cotton prices bottomed out, accompanied by a new wave of racist extremism - white-on-black riots in northern cities like Chicago and Detroit and the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan in the South.

By the 1930s, lynchings had declined to about ten a year, falling to three a year the following decade. Historians and sociologists credit the urbanization of the South, the accelerating migration of blacks to Northern cities, the NAACP's persistent (though unsuccessful) campaign for a federal anti-lynching law, and the growing embarrassment [EVOLUTION] of Southern opinion leaders (including some newspaper editors and businessmen) by the stain of lynching.

Although the number of lynchings fell by the 1940s, segregationists continued to use violence and terror to keep African Americans second-class citizens and to thwart the civil rights movement. Indeed, the Senate's apology comes at a time when a number of prominent racist murder cases -- including the killings of 14-year old Emmett Till in 1955 [ALL BECAUSE TILL WHISTLED AT A WHITE WOMAN] and civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Mickey Schwerner in 1964 -- are being reopened.

What are lynching's lessons for American society today? If there is one truism about race relations, it is that overt bigotry, hate crimes, and discrimination flourish during economic hard times. These acts of racism decline when the economic improves, when almost everyone who wants to work has a job at decent wages, and when people have economic security.

Although it is simplistic to argue that if you give people a job, their hearts and minds will follow, it is certainly true that full employment at decent wages makes interracial co-operation much more likely. [I HEARD THAT!] Otherwise, competition over economic crumbs will lead to resentments, bitterness, and racial tensions. [CAN I GET AN AMEN IN THIS HOUSE OF GOD?] In recent times, economic hard times are correlated with increases in the murder rate, racial violence, hate crimes, and opposition to immigration and remedies like affirmative action.

This is exactly what occurred during the 1990s. Aided by a tight labor market, the nation's poverty rate dropped from 15.1% in 1993 to 11.3% by 2000 -- the lowest rate since 1973. The poverty rate fell significantly in central cities and for black Americans. These trends also account for the decline in violent crime in America's cities during this period. . Because unemployment was low, employers hired people who they may not have hired when there was a "surplus" of workers. Workers with fewer skills and less education, particularly black men, got "pulled" into the labor market. Because whites were doing better, too, there was less competition for jobs and fewer incidents of racial hatred.

In contrast, when times are tough -- or when economic prosperity primarily benefits the wealthy, and the gap between the rich and everyone else widens - racial prejudice is more likely to trigger hate crimes and a political backlash against minorities and the poor.

The history of lynching should remind us that economic justice is a precondition for racial justice. Currently, the vast majority of Americans -- white, black, brown, yellow, and all shades in-between -- are not benefitting from the nation's recent economic upturn and will certainly suffer even more during the next inevitable downturn of the business cycle.

I've always been fond of porn in a perverse sort of way, and decided to carry it over to mass media in the form of political punditry. For instance, one CEO at Lockheed Martin Corp. makes millions of dollars if not billions of dollars in salary, $20 billion or so that's used to pay that salary comes directly from our taxes. So, you're implying that the one person on disability or welfare is taking more than that one CEO. $1 billion in ONE person's salary or assets is equal to 50,000 people receiving $20,000 worth of benefits each. In 2006, the U.S. government will spend over one (1) trillion (or 1000 billions) dollars on past and current military expenditures. That same U.S. government will spend $842 billion on Human and Physical Resources that include: Education, Health/Human Services, HUD, Food/Nutrition programs, Labor Department, Soc. Sec. Admin, Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Interior, Transportation (streets and highways), Environmental Protection, Army Corps Engineers, NSF, FCC, Homeland Security (25%).

Most of the needs of the U.S. people are taken care of with less than $900 billion, while the military alone gets over $1000 billion. Most of the money spent on Human and Government Resources is put into government funded programs whereas most of the money spent on the military is put into the hands of private corporations. I think it's called, privatization.

Basically, you're complaining about spending too much money on welfare while ignoring the fact that the U.S. government spends over $1000 billion on the military with a large portion of that going directly to CEO's and other corporate lackeys of multinational military-based corporations.

While your beloved rich, white, male elected officials and corporate figureheads talk about and convince lower-income white folks of the importance of occupying Iraq, privatizing government services, lowering taxes, and being against immigration because it'll be better for the white people of the U.S., their corporate friends and themselves are simultaneously and happily accepting government subsidies in the form of corporate government contracts which takes tax money away from the lower-income white people of the United States and deposits it directly into personal and corporate bank accounts located somewhere half-way across the world via direct deposit. I don't especially care if you think I'm one of "the deserving poor" or not, nor should anyone on disability, nor disabled people in the work-force, have to care what you, your family, friends and associates think or feel about me and the other 'bottom feeders", because, quite frankly, you aren't God, Jesus, Odin, Zeus, etc, etc, etc.

You are a human being, nothing more and nothing less, as are Mr. Lofton, Baba-ette, myself, and every other human being walking(or wheeling)around on this planet to-day, breathing air and trying to get through the day as best they can.

In fact, what those policies represent is an admission of weakness and failure at the very highest levels, as well as among the ranks of their supporters, of a country's governing classes to solve economic, social and political problems of long-standing.

So, when in doubt, find a scape-goat, or two, twenty, or twenty million, on which the govering classes and their supporters can take out their frustrations in various forms on the scape-goats, while profiteers and opportunists, of various classes, shades and degrees, loot as much as they can of the scape-goats' belongings as possible, to sell or re-distribute as they see fit.

Such people are reffered to as "vultures", "rats", or "buzzards", with the occasional jibe of "worms" thrown in for good measure.

However, the creatures from which those insults are derived serve a very important function in the eco-system, in that they dispose of corpses and other forms of waste found therein.

That can't be said of their human counter-parts, however.

For they have, through their own volition, rather than the dictates of biological necessity, chosen to prey on the weaknesses, mis-fortunes and follies of their fellow siblings in the human family, and do so quite happily at that, for as long as the feeding frenzy that is genocide in any given culture lasts.

It is this element of choice, freely given, that allegedly differs the human species from the rest of the so-called lower animals, and, if your choice is to be a racist snob, then so be it.

But, do not expect your utterances to go un-challenged, especially if they are made in a public forum such as this one, do not expect your wishes to become public policy, at least, not without a long, protracted and exhausting battle on a variety of fronts, and, if you should ever be so imprudent, rash and grossly stupid, as to take up arms on behalf of your beliefs, do not expect those whom you would kill, injure, maim, etc, etc, to submit meekly to your will embodied in said force of arms.

There is a French word, genocidaires, which, imperfectly translated into English, means "genocidists" or "mass murderers", take your pick, and which refers to those who advocate and practise genocide.

I learned this term in the course of my limited study of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, and I find it a useful one in describing people who advocate such horrors, however covertly.

That genocide, like all modern genocides, occurred with a great deal of advance preparation, especially through the use of radio and newspaper propaganda, of the Hutu population, to condition them into believing that the Tutsis were "cockroaches", and similar such vermin, to be expunged and eliminated at all costs, along with Hutus who dissented against the government and its supporters.

There was substantial recruiting, indoctrination and training of Hutu paramilitary groups by segments of the Rwandan Hutu governing classes to carry out this set of grisly tasks, and, when the time came, they, along with many "ordinary" Hutus, did just that, and more, with gusto.

That is, until the Tutsi rebels approached the outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda's capital.

Then, the Rwandan Hutu elite, their immediate supporters, Rwandan soldiers, police and paramilitaries, and many of the Hutu civilians who participated in the genocide, and many who didn't, but feared possible reprisals by the Tutsi rebels, fled, first to western Rwanda, then, eventually to eastern Zaire, where they settled in refugee camps under the protection of Zaire's then-dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko(Remember him?).

Still, in the end, many of these people have had to answer, either to Rwandan or UN courts, for the crimes they committed during the genocide.

Some of them have been sentenced to death, while others to life imprisonment, and others still to long terms in prison.

Either way, the Rwandan genocidaires' deeds have caught up with them, and they are, in one way or another, paying for it, and for the disgusting and utterly morally bankrupt choices they made in the late 1980's through mid-1990's.

Do not think that you, or those of similar ideological ilk to you, will get away with whatever you plan for Mexican nationals, because, ultimately, you won't.

Even if you yourself don't pay for your deeds, your children, grand-children, etc, will pay for them, in one way or another.

It may be monetarily, socially, or with blood, but someone will pay for the deeds that you, and others like you, propose to do to your fellow human beings, and the cost will NOT be cheap. It never is.

I neither know nor care what your belief system is, but, even if it's merely that of saving your own skin, the fact that you or your descendants will have to pay for your folly should at least make you take pause before inflicting yourself and your beliefs on others.

For, it is the forcible infliction of one's beliefs on others, that is perhaps one of the worst offences to God and Humanity alike, and it is an infraction neither easily, if ever forgiven, by either.

One more item before I go, and that is, an apology to the readers here on this site for going along with the simpletons, however unwittingly, in posting replies to their puerile and useless comments, which culminated in the disgusting piece of juvenile trash posted by "Hearst" on Saturday last.

I had read the post after making my last comment, and did not post an immediate reply to it, as I should have.

The fault for that is mine alone, and I make no excuses for not having done so.

I will not do so again in future.

I am quite glad that Mr. Lofton and Ms. Baba-ette responded as they did to that bit of dreck(mud or filth in German), as well as to "Miriam"'s piece of schmutz.

The reason I advise the first part of my last statement, is not to add any more chum to the feeding frenzy that this topic has become, and to eventually discourage, any further postings by "Hearst", "Napoleon III" and their ilk.

I don't believe that such a strategy will immediately work, but, given enough time and in-attention, these children in grown people's bodies will eventually get bored if no one comes out to play with them.

America's Corporate Benedict Arnolds

'That's un-American' is the cry heard whenever the unwritten code of American values is breached, Compassion, fairness and equal opportunity are hallmarks, and although you might not be able to recite chapter and verse of the code, you know when it is broken.

On this the 204th anniversary of the death of Benedict Arnold, one of America's most famous traitors, it's time to consider whether some of America's largest corporations that pay little or no federal taxes, have indeed become traitors.

Large corporations are in full retreat from paying their fair share of taxes. In 2003, corporations paid just 7% of the cost of the US government, according to a study by Citizens for Tax Justice.

It wasn't always this way. At the end of the Second World War, a time when paying taxes was viewed as a patriotic duty, corporations paid half the cost of the federal government. Even as recently as the 1970s, corporate taxes accounted for 20% of federal treasury receipts.

This dramatic change has shifted the cost of paying for government to smaller businesses and individual taxpayers, while at the same time boosting corporate profits and their executive's pay.

In 2003, ten companies each reported more than $1 billion in profits to their shareholders, yet paid no federal corporate income tax. Collectively, these firms that have claimed the only way they can remain competitive is through tax breaks, earned $30 billion in profits and paid their CEOs $126 million in 2003. The average pay of the CEOs of the corporate Benedict Arnolds was $12.6 million, 51% higher than the pay of the average large-company CEO as reported by Business Week.

Who are these resurrected Benedict Arnolds? A new report published by United for a Fair Economy entitled Corporate Traitors: The Decline of Corporate Taxes and the Subsequent Rise of CEO Pay(.pdf) bestows awards on some of these tax avoiders.

Boeing, the nation's second largest defense contractor, is honored with the 'Taxes are the Real Enemy' Benedict Arnold award. Boeing received the largest federal tax refund in 2003. So large was Boeing's $1.7 billion tax refund that it dwarfed the company's $1 billion in reported earnings, giving the company an effective tax rate of -159% according to Citizens for Tax Justice.

Viagra maker Pfizer took home the 'Taxpaying Dysfunction (TD)' award. Despite $14 billion in profits between 2001 and 2003, Pfizer couldn't get excited enough about paying taxes to perform sending just $1.2 billion to the federal treasury, a miserly effective tax rate of just 8.2%. In contrast, Pfizer's industry competitor Merck paid 32.5% of its $12.7 billion in three-year profits in federal taxes.

Pfizer saw no need to be Scrooge-like when it came to paying its CEO Hank McKinnell, however, who walked away with $21.4 million in 2004, more than three times what Merck paid its CEO.

These disparities in tax rates adversely affect the competitive playing field not only between giant companies like Pfizer and Merck, but to an even greater degree between large companies and small businesses. While the average large company today pays only 18% of its income in federal taxes, many small businesses owners pay 34%.

Two centuries after Benedict Arnold used his power and influence to gain a plum assignment as commander of West Point, and then used that position to surrender this important fort to the British, we are witness to other powerful players using their privilege and standing to rewrite the nation's tax laws for their own gain.

Corporate tax and accounting departments have morphed from backwater cost centers to sexy profit drivers. Investments in research and development have shrunk as investments in aggressive lobbying and accounting have blossomed. These corporate Benedict Arnolds, like their namesakes, are jeopardizing the nation's security.

The American public, angered by Arnold's betrayal, went on to fight and reclaim West Point from the British. Today the fight is about restoring the fairness of the tax system by assuring that corporations pay their fair share to maintain the society upon which their vast wealth depends.

The fight has many fronts

* Congress should reform and simplify the corporate tax code, lowering the rate, eliminating the myriad of tax breaks and implementing progressive tax principles that would tax Big Business at higher rates than small family businesses, reversing the current reality. -The corporate alternative minimum tax, eviscerated by the Clinton Administration, needs to be restored, so that all profitable companies pay taxes.
* We need to withdraw from tax treaties with many of the 90 tax haven nations who aid and abet corporate tax avoiders.

Those who continue down Benedict Arnold's path might, like the infamous traitor, consider taking themselves to another country. Their current behavior is un-American and unacceptable.

US Poor Fare Badly by Comparison

The New York Times has been publishing an excellent series on class in America. One quote in that piece particularly stood out for me. Berkeley economist David Levine told the paper that "being born poor in the U.S. gives you disadvantages unlike anything in Western Europe and Japan and Canada."
I decided to verify if that's true. One of the sources I used was the website of the Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development.

The numbers spoke for themselves.

In both the statistics for overall poverty and child poverty, the United States performed badly.

For overall poverty, the U.S. numbers (17.1 percent) for 2000 were significantly higher than for most European countries. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom had poverty rates of 7.0 percent, 9.8 percent, and 11.4 percent, respectively. Canada and Japan were lower than the United States, too, with a poverty rate of 10.3 percent and 15.3 percent, respectively. The organization average was just 10.2 percent.

For child poverty, the story was not much different. The U.S. rate (21.7 percent) was much higher than most members of the organization or the organization's average as a whole (12.1 percent). The Scandinavian nations had child poverty rates in the 2 to 3 percent range.

The Economic Policy Institute comes out with an excellent book every two years called "The State of Working America." The latest edition, "The State of Working America 2004/2005" contains a lot of very useful international comparisons.

A series of tables and charts lays out the level of inequality in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada. By a number of measures, the United States is the most unequal country of the lot, such as the ratio of the income of the bottom 10 percent of households to that of the top 10 percent.

When it comes to health indicators, the United States fares worse than most other industrialized nations. A table available at the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe shows that the life expectancy for American women in 2000 was less than for women in 11 of the 15 European Union countries, Canada, and even Israel, while for men, it was less than for all but one (Ireland) of the 15 EU members, Canada and Israel. When it came to death among infants and children, the patterns were the same. Both the U.S. child mortality rate (8.6 per 1,000 births) and infant mortality rate (6.9 per 1,000 births) was higher than those for Europe, Canada, and Israel.

All this should not be a surprise. The European and Canadian social democratic model does a better job of taking care of its vulnerable--the poor, the young, and the infirm--than the laissez-faire U.S. approach.

The focus was on tax cuts for the wealthy, our war in Iraq, jobs being shipped overseas – and how all these issues affect working families. Working poor people cannot put on big fundraisers. The working poor do not attract cameras. In this part of the country, when their children graduate from high school, it is difficult for them to afford to go to college. Jobs are harder and harder to come by so they go to the military and thus become your Jessica Lynches and they come out of Appalachia and other poor communities disproportionately to the rest of the country.

For example, in those hills, and West Virginia, and Southern, Southeastern Kentucky, Ohio area, those making minimum wage are at 65% the poverty level, so they’re working poor. Most of the people are not on welfare. They work every day. A coal miner still dies every six hours from black lung disease. When you speak to and focus on the working poor, you begin to rebuild the heart strength and the soul of America again. We need to reinvest in America, put America back to work, and revive the great American promise.

They have the power to determine the next Senate. A small number of votes in that region determine everything. And so it is an attempt to convince even the working poor to not surrender and to vote their interest and not their fears. The last time, Bush and Cheney campaigned in 2000, they were wolves in sheep’s clothing to the people of Appalachia. For example, Bush and Cheney campaigned on guns. Well, the people in Appalachia still got their guns but they don’t have jobs and they don’t have healthcare.
