Federal court judge rules Homeless law unconstitutional

Homeless law unconstitutional

A federal court judge ruled this morning that the city of Las Vegas' ordinance prohibiting the feeding of homeless people is unconstitutional because it targets a particular segment of the population.

Judge Robert Jones directed city attorneys to redraft a law that limits the number of people at a park gathering and sets restrictions on how frequently a particular group can gather. In the meantime, community activists can resume feeding the homeless.

Well, I always knew there was something unconstitutional about Las Vegas ...

Momma Sacco, you won ... how does victory feel? It won't be long before that bio-pic based on your recent struggles will hit the silver screen--which actress do you see playing your part ..?

This is important for so many reasons. First and foremost, so the homeless can obviously benefit from the activism of Food Not Bombs once again (especially given how much food Las Vegas of all towns is going to throw away this Thanksgiving). Also too, this can be used to pimp slap the next motherfucker who says the world is doomed, there's nothing left of the left, and so on ...

Having been homeless myself (June 12th, 1991 to July 3rd, 1992) this good news holds special meaning for me. In my own case, a $25,000 inheritance from my grandfather got me off the streets, but despite what some libertarian defending this evil economy would claim, most homeless people don't have such fairy tale good luck ...

Once again, we the people need a Greepeace version of FDR's New Deal--and where is the money to pay for this eco-friendly jobs program going to come from? I think you know ...

No More Money for Iraq War, Kucinich Says
by Stephen Koff

WASHINGTON - Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the former presidential peace candidate whose opposition to the Iraq war is now practically mainstream, wants to cut off future funding for the war.

It's the only way to assure a pullout soon, he says.

The Cleveland Democrat, appearing Wednesday on the Democracy Now independent broadcast network and Thursday on Fox News, says he will push that message in Congress and try to get a majority of his colleagues to agree. He would leave current funding in place but refuse the next Bush administration request for more money for the war, which could come by spring.

Money already in the pipeline would cover the pullout, he told The Plain Dealer.

Meantime, the United States could begin discussions with the United Nations and Arab nations including Syria and Iran about an international "peace force" to take over.

American dissatisfaction with the war is widespread.

Kucinich's calls for a pullout this rapidly, however, may be in the minority of even his own party.

Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, said Wednesday in a press breakfast, "Democrats are united in our feeling that we must redeploy. Does that mean pull out immediately? Of course it doesn't."

Rather, Reid said, "we have to have more counterinsurgency, we must do better force protection, and of course we've got to have better trainers. . . . We also have to do something to revitalize reconstruction."

To Kucinich, that would only mean more lost American and Iraqi lives.

"It's inevitable that we're going to get out of Iraq," he said. "This isn't a question of if, but of when."
