The local Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter chapter hosted a multimedia energy festival at the Spring Valley Library in Las Vegas on Saturday April 14th as part of a nationwide series of actions called Step it Up asking Congress to cut carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050.

The action was tame, as might be expected of an event organized by the Sierra Club that took place in the library. The only indications anything out the ordinary was happening was a woman outside greeting library patrons and a couple of banners proclaiming "Step It Up!" linking the event with the nationwide campaign. Tables in the hall wielded informational pamphlets on related topics and campaigns such as Cool Cities, where some city mayors are picking up some of the slack of the Bush administration regarding curbing global warming (sierraclub.org/coolcities ).

Friendly Sierra Club members directed interested visitors to a slide show presentation on alternative energy and related movies ranging from Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" to Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth".
The multimedia energy festival was one of over 1400 actions that happened around the US throughout the day at the culmination of a twelve week campaign by author Bill McKibben and a handfull of Middlebury College students. The organizors decided to encourage local events because it wouldn't use extensive fossil fuels (the way people traveling to DC for a march would) and it highlighted constituents' concerns to their congresspeople. Photos from actions around the country can be seen on the website of Step it up 2007.
