I bring all this up because often times, the way in which one looks at life, the universe and everything will reveal where one stands politically. If folks see life as being filled with conflict, then they'll act, vote and invest (or divest) accordingly. If folks see life as being something beautiful; something to be cherished and celebrated, again, their votes and investments will reflect that as well.

If you "think" the odds of another 9-11 are just that great (ask any mathematician who ain't on the take how wrong that one is), then you won't mind half of our taxes going toward the military-industrial complex every year. However, that in and of itself is the primarily reason why there has yet to be a Greenpeace version of FDR's New Deal (and given how fucked up our environment is, they'll be plenty of clean up work for both the trailer parks and the barrios, so don't stress about jobs, y'all). And if you're ignorant enough to think there's such a thing as "Human nature", then you're not likely to be investing in Humans since they're supposedly, naturally evil or whatever the libertarians are claiming, now are you?

All drugs need to be decriminalilzed, period. And if all businesses were worker-owned, everyone would have a job because no one is going to masochistically vote to fire themselves!

To Mr. "Hearst", it's interesting that you use that particular name, however slightly mis-spelled, as a psuedonym.

The actual Mr. Hearst started his newspaper publishing career as something of a populist and advocate for the working man, albeit not being above the use of yellow journalism to push causes, like the American invasion of Cuba in 1898, that he believed in.

But, it was his stances on Asian, specifically Chinese and Japanese, immigration and residence in California, starting in the early 1900's, as well as his sympathy for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in the 1930's, that have placed him in the rather ignominious historical position he occupies to-day.

Mind, his positions on these issues were not his solely, as they were shared by quite a number of European-Americans at the time.

However, simply because his positions were held by a number of his contemporaries , many of whom had been influenced by what Hearst's newspapers had to say about them, doesn't justify them in the slightest.

Ultimately, between those positions, as well as his well-known fling with actress Marion Davies(whom, it could be argued, was hurt far more professionally and personally by her association with Mr. Hearst than the other way 'round), William Randolph Hearst ended his life as rather something of a national laughing-stock.

A rich one, yes. But, then, riches aren't everything, as you know.

Finally, to Messrs Priestly and "Hearst", what do your responses have, if anything, to do with the issues originally presented?????

Lynching Lessons

WHAT DOES ALL THAT MEAN? IT MEANS HE KNOWS A LOT MORE THAN SOMEONE WHO'S GOTTEN BY THUS FAR SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HOW POPULAR/CHARISMATIC HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL!

On June 13, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution apologizing for its failure to adopt federal anti-lynching legislation, first proposed 105 years ago at a time when lynchings were a frequent occurrence. In the first half of the 20th century, several hundred anti-lynching laws were filed in Congress, and three were passed by the House of Representatives, but the Senate -- controlled by Southern Democrats, who used the filibuster -- consistently refused to adopt the law. One of the most powerful was Richard Russell (D-Georgia), whose name now adorns the Senate office building where the resolution was crafted.

What is outrageous is that 20 Senators initially declined to cosponsor the resolution, drafted by Sen. Mary Landreiu (D-Louisiana). Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) insisted on a voice vote, rather than a roll call vote, to avoid forcing members to put themselves on record. Even so, pressure from constituents pushed seven additional Senators to add their names as co-sponsors after the vote was taken.

Thirteen Republicans -- including Trent Lott and Thad Cochran from Mississippi, the state with the most lynchings - continued to avoid joining the list of cosponsors. (The other holdouts include Lamar Alexander [TN], Robert Bennett and Orrin Hatch [Utah], John Cornyn [TX], Michael Crapo [Idaho], Michael Enzi and Craig Thomas [Wyoming], Chuck Grasley [Iowa], Judd Gregg and John Sununu [NH], and Richard Shelby [Alabama]). Even today, it seems, lynching remains controversial.

in September 1946. Paul Robeson -- actor, singer and all-around Renaissance man -- had tag-teamed with Albert Einstein and other activists to pressure President Harry Truman into pursuing anti-lynching legislation. Inside the Oval Office, Robeson tried to read a prepared statement when Truman rudely interrupted him. The Democratic president said he was concerned about lynching -- but the time wasn't quite right for the passage of federal legislation because it'd alienate Southern Democrats. Robeson's response to this was best described in Martin Duberman's definitive biography on Robeson:
"Robeson -- who later told reporters he had felt it was important to be polite, but not 'excessively polite' -- said that if the federal government refused to defend its black citizens against murder, blacks would have to defend themselves. Truman declared the interview at an end." (Keep in mind this was 20 years before the formation of the Black Panther Party in Oakland. Robeson was a prophet.) Also in 1946, Henry A. Wallace -- FDR's vice president and Truman's secretary of commerce -- became increasingly vocal about the Faustian and Machiavellian way America dealt with Stalinism. Truman then 86ed Wallace from the presidential cabinet, prompting Wallace to run against Truman in 1948 under the banner of the Progressive Party -- a lost cause Robeson nonetheless supported.

AND NOW, BACK TO THE SHOW ...

The Senate resolution is purely a symbolic act, but if it reminds us of the horrors of racial hatred and helps us address contemporary forms of bigotry, it will have served its purpose. What lessons should we learn from the sordid history of lynching in America?

Many news reports of the Senate' s action noted that there were 4,732 recorded lynchings between 1882 and 1951, although there were certainly many undocumented lynchings before and during that period [JUST AS THE DOCUMENTARY SHOAH HELPED JEWS EXPOSED THE HOLOCAUST, A SIMILAR WORK SHOULD BE DONE TO GET AN EXACT DEATH TOLL OF HOW MANY BLACKS DIED BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS JUST THAT FUCKING AFRAID OF A TIGER WOODS/HALLE BERRY/LENNY KRAVITZ LOOKING GRANDCHILD]. Most of the recorded lynchings occurred before 1930. The vast majority of lynchings took place in the South and the border states, although lynchings were not unknown in the North and Midwest, too. Three-fourths of the victims were black.

Missing from most recent news accounts of the Senate's apology are the underlying social conditions that led to most lynchings and the resulting fluctuations in lynchings.

Between 1880 and 1930, 2805 people - 2500 of them black - were killed by lynch mobs in the 10 southern states. According to Stewart Tolnay and E.M. Beck's authoritative study, A Festival of Violence: An Analysis of Southern Lynchings, on average, "a black man, woman, or child was murdered nearly once a week, every week" during those years by a white lynch mob.

But the number of lynchings each year fluctuated widely, highly correlated with the price of cotton. Low cotton prices -- an indication of poor economic conditions -- led to an increase in lynchings. When economic conditions improved, lynchings declined.

This suggests that while most Southern whites -- especially rural farmers and workers -- held racist beliefs, they did not always act on these beliefs through mob violence. Economic hard times brought out the worst in these people, pushing them to act out their frustrations.

Obviously, the victims of lynchings were not responsible for the value of cotton or the general level of business activity. In that way, lynching was an irrational act, a form of scapegoating, not unlike the way the German people vented their frustrations by vilifying and killing Jews when their country was thrown into economic depression in the 1930s.

Most lynchings took place in small towns and isolated [ISOLATED, AS IN IGNORANT, NOT INNOCENT, GODDAMN IT] rural communities, characterized by widespread poverty and illiteracy [ILLITERACY, SEE?]. Participants in lynch mobs were typically sharecroppers, tenant farmers and common laborers. Their economic position was similar to that of African Americans.

Of course, most people who joined lynch mobs were probably unaware of the underlying conditions that triggered their behavior. Rather than blame general economic conditions or specific people and institutions with economic power, they justified their actions by pointing to the behavior of blacks, especially violations of racial manners. Lynchings were often triggered by a rumor of a sexual offense such as rape (typically unfounded) by a black man against a white woman [THE PRICE OF LIBERTY IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE AND WHEN YOU FORGET HISTORY IT REPEATS ITSELF, SIMPLE. THAT GOES FOR THE FEAR OF MISCEGENATION TOO; DOESN'T JUST APPLY TO THE HOLOCAUST OR THE TRAIL OF TEARS, YA KNOW] or by other offenses which whites interpreted as blacks not "knowing their place," such as insulting a white person, trying to vote, murder, or stealing.

Back then, rural southern white society was divided into two major classes -- the dominant planters and major employers, and the class of day laborers, sharecroppers, and tenant farmers. The planters and big employers depended on cheap white and black labor. When economic conditions worsened, poor whites felt threatened by competition from even cheaper black labor. At the time, groups like the Farmers Alliance were trying to mobilize a coalition of white and black laborers and tenant farmers to regulate the banks and railroads that were gouging small farmers. But racial fears and violence undermined the Southern Populist movement. By identifying with the ideology of white supremacy and segregation, most poor Southern whites chose to form political alliances around race rather than class lines.

Most upper-class and middle-class Southern whites, and most white politicians, condoned lynching as a form of maintaining the racial hierarchy [SAY ANARCHISTS, HOW DO Y'ALL FEEL ABOUT HIERARCHIES?]. Although the white elite may not have directly participated in most lynchings, they benefitted from them [IN OTHER WORDS, THE KINGPIN DIDN'T KILL ELEKTRA; THE KINGPIN HIRED BULLSEYE TO KILL ELEKTRA ... GRASP THE CONCEPT AND QUIT TRYING TO HELP GREAT POWER DUCK GREAT RESPONSIBILITY, YOU LIBERTARIAN/IMPERIALIST-APOLOGIST FUCKS!!!].

The number of lynchings peaked at 230 in 1892, which coincided with a dramatic softening in demand for southern cotton. The bloody 1890s were followed by several years of rising cotton prices and a decline in violence against southern blacks. Following World War One, cotton prices bottomed out, accompanied by a new wave of racist extremism - white-on-black riots in northern cities like Chicago and Detroit and the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan in the South.

By the 1930s, lynchings had declined to about ten a year, falling to three a year the following decade. Historians and sociologists credit the urbanization of the South, the accelerating migration of blacks to Northern cities, the NAACP's persistent (though unsuccessful) campaign for a federal anti-lynching law, and the growing embarrassment [EVOLUTION] of Southern opinion leaders (including some newspaper editors and businessmen) by the stain of lynching.

Although the number of lynchings fell by the 1940s, segregationists continued to use violence and terror to keep African Americans second-class citizens and to thwart the civil rights movement. Indeed, the Senate's apology comes at a time when a number of prominent racist murder cases -- including the killings of 14-year old Emmett Till in 1955 [ALL BECAUSE TILL WHISTLED AT A WHITE WOMAN] and civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Mickey Schwerner in 1964 -- are being reopened.

What are lynching's lessons for American society today? If there is one truism about race relations, it is that overt bigotry, hate crimes, and discrimination flourish during economic hard times. These acts of racism decline when the economic improves, when almost everyone who wants to work has a job at decent wages, and when people have economic security.

Although it is simplistic to argue that if you give people a job, their hearts and minds will follow, it is certainly true that full employment at decent wages makes interracial co-operation much more likely. [I HEARD THAT!] Otherwise, competition over economic crumbs will lead to resentments, bitterness, and racial tensions. [CAN I GET AN AMEN IN THIS HOUSE OF GOD?] In recent times, economic hard times are correlated with increases in the murder rate, racial violence, hate crimes, and opposition to immigration and remedies like affirmative action.

This is exactly what occurred during the 1990s. Aided by a tight labor market, the nation's poverty rate dropped from 15.1% in 1993 to 11.3% by 2000 -- the lowest rate since 1973. The poverty rate fell significantly in central cities and for black Americans. These trends also account for the decline in violent crime in America's cities during this period. . Because unemployment was low, employers hired people who they may not have hired when there was a "surplus" of workers. Workers with fewer skills and less education, particularly black men, got "pulled" into the labor market. Because whites were doing better, too, there was less competition for jobs and fewer incidents of racial hatred.

In contrast, when times are tough -- or when economic prosperity primarily benefits the wealthy, and the gap between the rich and everyone else widens - racial prejudice is more likely to trigger hate crimes and a political backlash against minorities and the poor.

The history of lynching should remind us that economic justice is a precondition for racial justice. Currently, the vast majority of Americans -- white, black, brown, yellow, and all shades in-between -- are not benefitting from the nation's recent economic upturn and will certainly suffer even more during the next inevitable downturn of the business cycle.

Are you suggesting that lower-income folks and people on disability are stealing tax money and that the more immigrants who have access to these services, the more services our tax money will have to pay for? So, if you are, you're implying that it's not important how the CEO's and other corporate employees steal our tax money as well. And steal much more. For instance, one CEO at Lockheed Martin Corp. makes millions of dollars if not billions of dollars in salary, $20 billion or so that's used to pay that salary comes directly from our taxes. So, you're implying that the one person on disability or welfare is taking more than that one CEO. $1 billion in ONE person's salary or assets is equal to 50,000 people receiving $20,000 worth of benefits each. Is one person really more valuable than 50,000 people? The table below shows how some corporations are benefiting directly from our tax money:

And this is only 10 of the corporations that are taking our tax money. In 2006, the U.S. government will spend over one (1) trillion (or 1000 billions) dollars on past and current military expenditures. That same U.S. government will spend $842 billion on Human and Physical Resources that include: Education, Health/Human Services, HUD, Food/Nutrition programs, Labor Department, Soc. Sec. Admin, Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Interior, Transportation (streets and highways), Environmental Protection, Army Corps Engineers, NSF, FCC, Homeland Security (25%).

Most of the needs of the U.S. people are taken care of with less than $900 billion, while the military alone gets over $1000 billion. Most of the money spent on Human and Government Resources is put into government funded programs whereas most of the money spent on the military is put into the hands of private corporations. I think it's called, privatization.

Basically, you're complaining about spending too much money on welfare while ignoring the fact that the U.S. government spends over $1000 billion on the military with a large portion of that going directly to CEO's and other corporate lackeys of multinational military-based corporations.

While your beloved rich, white, male elected officials and corporate figureheads talk about and convince lower-income white folks of the importance of occupying Iraq, privatizing government services, lowering taxes, and being against immigration because it'll be better for the white people of the U.S., their corporate friends and themselves are simultaneously and happily accepting government subsidies in the form of corporate government contracts which takes tax money away from the lower-income white people of the United States and deposits it directly into personal and corporate bank accounts located somewhere half-way across the world via direct deposit. After posting what I thought would be my last comment on this topic on Saturday last, I had decided to abstain from any further discussion of this topic, as not to encourage more shit-artistry from the Scheiss-Meisteren Hearst and Napoleon.

However, on further reflection, I decided that, if I did say anything more about this subject, it would be that, while there should be, and are legitmate grounds for discussion of "illegal" immigration, and its social, cultural, economic, and political impacts on the peoples of the US and Mexico, no arguments, good, bad nor indifferent, had been advanced by the Minutemen Project's erstwhile supporters who posted here.

Instead, what they posted was a set of painfully unfunny, racist, and quite nasty jokes and japes at Mexicans and African-Americans, combined with a fifth-rate Monty Pythonesque version of Napoleon the Third, revived from the dead, and projecting his plans as to what to do with the population of Mexico, and Mexican expatriates living in the US, once he'd "reconquered" Mexico.

Still, as a white, working-class male who is on disability myself, I can tell you this, "Miriam", I don't want nor need your pity, approbation, nor condemnation.

I don't especially care if you think I'm one of "the deserving poor" or not, nor should anyone on disability, nor disabled people in the work-force, have to care what you, your family, friends and associates think or feel about me and the other 'bottom feeders", because, quite frankly, you aren't God, Jesus, Odin, Zeus, etc, etc, etc.

You are a human being, nothing more and nothing less, as are Mr. Lofton, Baba-ette, myself, and every other human being walking(or wheeling)around on this planet to-day, breathing air and trying to get through the day as best they can.

In fact, what those policies represent is an admission of weakness and failure at the very highest levels, as well as among the ranks of their supporters, of a country's governing classes to solve economic, social and political problems of long-standing.

So, when in doubt, find a scape-goat, or two, twenty, or twenty million, on which the govering classes and their supporters can take out their frustrations in various forms on the scape-goats, while profiteers and opportunists, of various classes, shades and degrees, loot as much as they can of the scape-goats' belongings as possible, to sell or re-distribute as they see fit.

Such people are reffered to as "vultures", "rats", or "buzzards", with the occasional jibe of "worms" thrown in for good measure.

However, the creatures from which those insults are derived serve a very important function in the eco-system, in that they dispose of corpses and other forms of waste found therein.

That can't be said of their human counter-parts, however.

For they have, through their own volition, rather than the dictates of biological necessity, chosen to prey on the weaknesses, mis-fortunes and follies of their fellow siblings in the human family, and do so quite happily at that, for as long as the feeding frenzy that is genocide in any given culture lasts.

It is this element of choice, freely given, that allegedly differs the human species from the rest of the so-called lower animals, and, if your choice is to be a racist snob, then so be it.

But, do not expect your utterances to go un-challenged, especially if they are made in a public forum such as this one, do not expect your wishes to become public policy, at least, not without a long, protracted and exhausting battle on a variety of fronts, and, if you should ever be so imprudent, rash and grossly stupid, as to take up arms on behalf of your beliefs, do not expect those whom you would kill, injure, maim, etc, etc, to submit meekly to your will embodied in said force of arms.

There is a French word, genocidaires, which, imperfectly translated into English, means "genocidists" or "mass murderers", take your pick, and which refers to those who advocate and practise genocide.

I learned this term in the course of my limited study of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, and I find it a useful one in describing people who advocate such horrors, however covertly.

That genocide, like all modern genocides, occurred with a great deal of advance preparation, especially through the use of radio and newspaper propaganda, of the Hutu population, to condition them into believing that the Tutsis were "cockroaches", and similar such vermin, to be expunged and eliminated at all costs, along with Hutus who dissented against the government and its supporters.

There was substantial recruiting, indoctrination and training of Hutu paramilitary groups by segments of the Rwandan Hutu governing classes to carry out this set of grisly tasks, and, when the time came, they, along with many "ordinary" Hutus, did just that, and more, with gusto.

That is, until the Tutsi rebels approached the outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda's capital.

Then, the Rwandan Hutu elite, their immediate supporters, Rwandan soldiers, police and paramilitaries, and many of the Hutu civilians who participated in the genocide, and many who didn't, but feared possible reprisals by the Tutsi rebels, fled, first to western Rwanda, then, eventually to eastern Zaire, where they settled in refugee camps under the protection of Zaire's then-dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko(Remember him?).

Still, in the end, many of these people have had to answer, either to Rwandan or UN courts, for the crimes they committed during the genocide.

Some of them have been sentenced to death, while others to life imprisonment, and others still to long terms in prison.

Either way, the Rwandan genocidaires' deeds have caught up with them, and they are, in one way or another, paying for it, and for the disgusting and utterly morally bankrupt choices they made in the late 1980's through mid-1990's.

Do not think that you, or those of similar ideological ilk to you, will get away with whatever you plan for Mexican nationals, because, ultimately, you won't.

Even if you yourself don't pay for your deeds, your children, grand-children, etc, will pay for them, in one way or another.

It may be monetarily, socially, or with blood, but someone will pay for the deeds that you, and others like you, propose to do to your fellow human beings, and the cost will NOT be cheap. It never is.

I neither know nor care what your belief system is, but, even if it's merely that of saving your own skin, the fact that you or your descendants will have to pay for your folly should at least make you take pause before inflicting yourself and your beliefs on others.

For, it is the forcible infliction of one's beliefs on others, that is perhaps one of the worst offences to God and Humanity alike, and it is an infraction neither easily, if ever forgiven, by either.

One more item before I go, and that is, an apology to the readers here on this site for going along with the simpletons, however unwittingly, in posting replies to their puerile and useless comments, which culminated in the disgusting piece of juvenile trash posted by "Hearst" on Saturday last.

I had read the post after making my last comment, and did not post an immediate reply to it, as I should have.

The fault for that is mine alone, and I make no excuses for not having done so.

I will not do so again in future.

I am quite glad that Mr. Lofton and Ms. Baba-ette responded as they did to that bit of dreck(mud or filth in German), as well as to "Miriam"'s piece of schmutz.

I would respectfully advise posters to this site, however, that, unless the posts by these trolls(rather a kind term for them, I think) to generally ignore them, and, if possible, for the Editorial Collective to consider putting this topic, and related commentary, in the Hidden Posts section of the site, if they feel it is necessary.

The reason I advise the first part of my last statement, is not to add any more chum to the feeding frenzy that this topic has become, and to eventually discourage, any further postings by "Hearst", "Napoleon III" and their ilk.

I don't believe that such a strategy will immediately work, but, given enough time and in-attention, these children in grown people's bodies will eventually get bored if no one comes out to play with them.

America's Corporate Benedict Arnolds

'That's un-American' is the cry heard whenever the unwritten code of American values is breached, Compassion, fairness and equal opportunity are hallmarks, and although you might not be able to recite chapter and verse of the code, you know when it is broken.

On this the 204th anniversary of the death of Benedict Arnold, one of America's most famous traitors, it's time to consider whether some of America's largest corporations that pay little or no federal taxes, have indeed become traitors.

Large corporations are in full retreat from paying their fair share of taxes. In 2003, corporations paid just 7% of the cost of the US government, according to a study by Citizens for Tax Justice.

It wasn't always this way. At the end of the Second World War, a time when paying taxes was viewed as a patriotic duty, corporations paid half the cost of the federal government. Even as recently as the 1970s, corporate taxes accounted for 20% of federal treasury receipts.

This dramatic change has shifted the cost of paying for government to smaller businesses and individual taxpayers, while at the same time boosting corporate profits and their executive's pay.

In 2003, ten companies each reported more than $1 billion in profits to their shareholders, yet paid no federal corporate income tax. Collectively, these firms that have claimed the only way they can remain competitive is through tax breaks, earned $30 billion in profits and paid their CEOs $126 million in 2003. The average pay of the CEOs of the corporate Benedict Arnolds was $12.6 million, 51% higher than the pay of the average large-company CEO as reported by Business Week.

Who are these resurrected Benedict Arnolds? A new report published by United for a Fair Economy entitled Corporate Traitors: The Decline of Corporate Taxes and the Subsequent Rise of CEO Pay(.pdf) bestows awards on some of these tax avoiders.

Boeing, the nation's second largest defense contractor, is honored with the 'Taxes are the Real Enemy' Benedict Arnold award. Boeing received the largest federal tax refund in 2003. So large was Boeing's $1.7 billion tax refund that it dwarfed the company's $1 billion in reported earnings, giving the company an effective tax rate of -159% according to Citizens for Tax Justice.

Viagra maker Pfizer took home the 'Taxpaying Dysfunction (TD)' award. Despite $14 billion in profits between 2001 and 2003, Pfizer couldn't get excited enough about paying taxes to perform sending just $1.2 billion to the federal treasury, a miserly effective tax rate of just 8.2%. In contrast, Pfizer's industry competitor Merck paid 32.5% of its $12.7 billion in three-year profits in federal taxes.

Pfizer saw no need to be Scrooge-like when it came to paying its CEO Hank McKinnell, however, who walked away with $21.4 million in 2004, more than three times what Merck paid its CEO.

These disparities in tax rates adversely affect the competitive playing field not only between giant companies like Pfizer and Merck, but to an even greater degree between large companies and small businesses. While the average large company today pays only 18% of its income in federal taxes, many small businesses owners pay 34%.

Two centuries after Benedict Arnold used his power and influence to gain a plum assignment as commander of West Point, and then used that position to surrender this important fort to the British, we are witness to other powerful players using their privilege and standing to rewrite the nation's tax laws for their own gain.

Corporate tax and accounting departments have morphed from backwater cost centers to sexy profit drivers. Investments in research and development have shrunk as investments in aggressive lobbying and accounting have blossomed. These corporate Benedict Arnolds, like their namesakes, are jeopardizing the nation's security.

The American public, angered by Arnold's betrayal, went on to fight and reclaim West Point from the British. Today the fight is about restoring the fairness of the tax system by assuring that corporations pay their fair share to maintain the society upon which their vast wealth depends.

The fight has many fronts

* Congress should reform and simplify the corporate tax code, lowering the rate, eliminating the myriad of tax breaks and implementing progressive tax principles that would tax Big Business at higher rates than small family businesses, reversing the current reality. -The corporate alternative minimum tax, eviscerated by the Clinton Administration, needs to be restored, so that all profitable companies pay taxes.
* We need to withdraw from tax treaties with many of the 90 tax haven nations who aid and abet corporate tax avoiders.

Those who continue down Benedict Arnold's path might, like the infamous traitor, consider taking themselves to another country. Their current behavior is un-American and unacceptable.

US Poor Fare Badly by Comparison

The New York Times has been publishing an excellent series on class in America. One quote in that piece particularly stood out for me. Berkeley economist David Levine told the paper that "being born poor in the U.S. gives you disadvantages unlike anything in Western Europe and Japan and Canada."
I decided to verify if that's true. One of the sources I used was the website of the Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development.

The numbers spoke for themselves.

In both the statistics for overall poverty and child poverty, the United States performed badly.

For overall poverty, the U.S. numbers (17.1 percent) for 2000 were significantly higher than for most European countries. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom had poverty rates of 7.0 percent, 9.8 percent, and 11.4 percent, respectively. Canada and Japan were lower than the United States, too, with a poverty rate of 10.3 percent and 15.3 percent, respectively. The organization average was just 10.2 percent.

For child poverty, the story was not much different. The U.S. rate (21.7 percent) was much higher than most members of the organization or the organization's average as a whole (12.1 percent). The Scandinavian nations had child poverty rates in the 2 to 3 percent range.

The Economic Policy Institute comes out with an excellent book every two years called "The State of Working America." The latest edition, "The State of Working America 2004/2005" contains a lot of very useful international comparisons.

A series of tables and charts lays out the level of inequality in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada. By a number of measures, the United States is the most unequal country of the lot, such as the ratio of the income of the bottom 10 percent of households to that of the top 10 percent.

When it comes to health indicators, the United States fares worse than most other industrialized nations. A table available at the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe shows that the life expectancy for American women in 2000 was less than for women in 11 of the 15 European Union countries, Canada, and even Israel, while for men, it was less than for all but one (Ireland) of the 15 EU members, Canada and Israel. When it came to death among infants and children, the patterns were the same. Both the U.S. child mortality rate (8.6 per 1,000 births) and infant mortality rate (6.9 per 1,000 births) was higher than those for Europe, Canada, and Israel.

All this should not be a surprise. The European and Canadian social democratic model does a better job of taking care of its vulnerable--the poor, the young, and the infirm--than the laissez-faire U.S. approach.

For example, in those hills, and West Virginia, and Southern, Southeastern Kentucky, Ohio area, those making minimum wage are at 65% the poverty level, so they’re working poor. Most of the people are not on welfare. They work every day. A coal miner still dies every six hours from black lung disease. When you speak to and focus on the working poor, you begin to rebuild the heart strength and the soul of America again. We need to reinvest in America, put America back to work, and revive the great American promise.

BuzzFlash: It seems that you’re trying to unify the country by having a dialogue with various groups that, at first glance, some people might believe are in opposition to one another. This project seems to have been quite successful. A CNN story stated
"The Border Patrol has acknowledged receiving 317 calls from Naco and
Douglas, resulting in 846 arrests, but the agency will not say whether
any of those calls came from project volunteers." From the Washington
Times quoting one of the Minutemen organizers: "Mr. Gilchrist noted
that fewer than 5,000 illegal aliens will be apprehended this month by
the U.S. Border Patrol in the Minuteman Project's 20-mile patrol area
compared with 64,000 in April 2004 and 73,000 in April 2003" and "The
U.S. Border Patrol has acknowledged making hundreds of arrests after
receiving calls from the area being patrolled by the Minuteman
volunteers, but has not confirmed whether any of those calls came from
the volunteers." The San Francisco Chronicle wrote "And, according to
the Border Patrol, the Mexican military is now actively helping illegal
immigrants, including known drug runners, reach safer border-crossing
points in order to avoid the Minutemen. No doubt this little citizen
uprising didn't figure into the handbook on how to enter the U.S.
illegally the Mexican government distributed to citizens last year."

So they proved it can be done. Yet our government tells us we can't
secure our borders but plans to spend another 81 billion in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Its primary job is to protect us and it is failing to do
this both physically and economically. It is supposed to regulate
business, not act as an accessory in flooding the country with cheap
labor to drive down wages for higher profits. If a neighboring country
is encouraging and abetting its citizens to break our laws, and those
same citizens are sending home more money than that nation makes
selling oil, its motives are plain. Yet our president agrees with
Vicente Fox that the Minutemen are vigilantes and wants to implement a
thinly-disguised amnesty program. Some state legislatures have voted to
give illegal aliens in-state college tuition while denying that right
to American citizens from other states. Others have passed laws
allowing them to obtain drivers licenses. The matricula consular visa,
an ID issued by the Mexican government, is starting to be accepted by
banks as a form of identification necessary to open an account and
obtain a mortgage loan, a direct violation of federal law. Meanwhile,
over 3 million people around the world are on the waiting list for US
visas.

Our elected officials are acting in violation of their oath to uphold
the laws of the country and are themselves encouraging and abetting
illegal immigration by granting these privileges. There are three
obvious benefits the federal government reaps from this.

1) The influx of people will drive the housing market, one of the few
industries that can't be completely outsourced. The federal government
owns 42% of Americas land, most of that in the western states. For
example, they own 87% of Nevada. Las Vegas is expanding onto government
land that was auctioned off to consortiums of homebuilders. The same
thing is happening near Mesquite, NV, about 90 miles northeast of
Vegas. Here's a specific example.

At this government site, http://propertydisposal.gsa.gov/property , it
shows land and other property the government is selling or has sold.
Recently, lots A thru J just north of Mesquite were auctioned off. Lot
J was 1250 acres. The government assigned a pre-auction fair market
value of $335,000 to this parcel. The winning bid was $4.1 million.
There are many other parcels around Vegas that have been sold with
similar results, where the sales price was substantially more than the
fair market value. There is currently another federal auction of land
near Laughlin. Once that land gets sold for exorbitant amounts, it
immediately inflates the value of that land and the surrounding land,
etc., etc. The government will continue to sell off America to the
highest bidder to help finance its overseas war on terror. Accepting
the matricula visa as required identification to get loans will
encourage this process.

2) The special interests that fill campaign coffers are well served.
Since labor costs make up on average 70% of the total cost of doing
business, cheap labor makes for better profits. This means more
independent contractors, less benefits for workers and more money for
executives and shareholders. Of course lobbyists will then have more
cash to spread around in Washington which will send more congressmen on
free golf trips overseas.

3) This flood of workers drives down wages and raises unemployment to
create more poverty. More poverty brings more crime which helps to fill
up the increasingly privatized prisons. This also creates a slave labor
class that performs tasks for a fraction of the cost in free society.
The joke of a drug war contributes even more inmates. And you can't
have an all-volunteer army with full employment. The US birthrate alone
can't provide enough cannon fodder for the new crusades in the Middle
East.

The government, therefore, is just unwilling to change what benefits
them. Corporations run the world and national borders have become
nothing more than public relations. Many on the left take a generic
liberal stance that it is racism driving those who would control our
borders since the majority of illegal aliens come from Mexico. This
issue is now beyond politics- its a matter of survival of this country.
We cannot continue to absorb Mexico's poverty at this alarming rate.
Our leaders should have taken Vicente Fox and others to task long ago
for their feeble efforts to improve the lives of poor Mexicans.
Otherwise they will continue to use the US as the safety valve for the
discontent of the impoverished. Mexico wins both ways - immigrants
remit billions back home and as our population grows we import more of
their oil. The current situation cannot stand.

Do something- e-mail or call your congressmen and senators, both on the
federal and state levels. E-mail the White House; its easy, just type
in White House in any search engine and that home page will come up. If
elected officials become afraid that they wont get re-elected, maybe
they will get off their collective ass and do something.

Case in point is the Enron Corporation, which, just last year, was the seventh largest company in America with revenue exceeding $100 billion and over 20,000 employees. Having contributed millions in campaign contributions to the Republican Party and the President, the company was strongly positioned to influence the direction of energy policies in the Bush Administration. One of the results of their efforts was a huge increase in electric rates in California.

Earlier this year, Enron was forced to admit that it had over-reported its profits by nearly $600 million. This led to the largest bankruptcy in history. While Enron was exaggerating its profits, and before its artificially high stock price plummeted, three top executives in the company, Lou Pai, Kenneth Lay and Jeff Skilling cashed in stock options worth some $560 million. Like rats on a sinking ship, they got their money out just in time. But they didn’t give that same opportunity to their employees. While Enron’s stock was crashing, the company forced more than 12,000 of its employees to retain Enron stock in their 401(k) pension plans. This caused massive losses for the workers and many lost their entire retirement savings.

Taxpayers will be delighted to know that the House Republicans included a $254 million corporate welfare check for Enron as part of their so-called “economic stimulus plan.” But it’s not just Enron.

The American people continue to pay by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. Many of the same drugs sold in this country by American drug companies are sold abroad at a fraction of the price. The result is that millions of Americans suffer, and some die, because they are unable to afford the medicine they need.

Meanwhile, year after year, drug companies constitute the most profitable industry in our country. Last year, they had profits that exceeded $30 billion. At a time when elderly citizens cut their dosages in half, nine executives at the top pharmaceutical corporations in the U.S. were given $890 million in stock options according to Families USA. This is on top of the $169.9 million in wages, bonuses and other compensation that these executives are already receiving.

How does the pharmaceutical industry manage to rip off the American people, generate huge profits, get massive tax breaks and provide outrageous compensation packages for their top management? Easy. As the wealthiest political lobby in Washington they have spent, over the last three years, more than $200 million in campaign contributions, lobbying activities and media advertising ...

... But wait, corporate self-dealing doesn’t end there. Take, for example, Big Blue. As the holiday season approached, IBM announced a new round of job cuts. According to published news reports, the company has cut more than 5,000 jobs in the United States since July. Meanwhile, they are building two new micro-processing plants in China where workers are paid a fraction of what American workers receive. To IBM watchers, this latest act is par for the course.

Two years ago, despite record-breaking profits and a pension fund surplus of some $10 billion, IBM slashed pension and retirement health benefits for workers in 1999 and 2000 and curtailed salaries in 2001. Meanwhile, the CEO of IBM, Louis Gerstner, raked in $176 million in total compensation and stock options over the past 2 years. In addition, he has accumulated over $260 million in unexercised stock options from IBM during his tenure. While slashing the pension plans of IBM employees, he negotiated a retirement plan over $1.1 million a year for himself.

Once again, no bad deed goes unrewarded. If the House Republican leadership gets its way IBM will receive $1.4 billion in corporate welfare this year.

Last year a Inyo County employee was arrested and charged with theft from and abuse of an elderly woman. Ms Lawhead reminds me of that jerk, the honorable Reverend Ray McKinley of Imperial County, California, who ripped off even more feeble, helpless old people by depleting their bank accounts after getting their ATM cards and PIN numbers... Tecopa woman charged in theft

TECOPA, CALIF. - When the head of the Tecopa Senior Program and popular community service volunteer Jacque Lawhead was laid off because of a controversial change in management at the Tecopa Hot Springs Park, many local residents were grieved. When Lawhead left town before her notice was up, apparently distraught, they were concerned. But when they learned she'd allegedly stolen approximately $50,000 from one of their neighbors, most of them were just plain stunned.

Jacque Lawhead, whose position as head of the Tecopa Senior Program and as office manager of the Inyo County Hot Springs Park placed her in a position of authority and trust, was officially charged just after Thanksgiving with grand theft and elder abuse, says Inyo County Sheriff's Office Investigator Marston Mottweiler.

She turned herself in at the Inyo County courthouse in Bishop on Dec. 1 and was arraigned there. After entering a plea of not guilty, Lawhead was appointed a public defender and released on her own recognizance.

Until the case is resolved, said Deputy District Attorney Tom Hardy, Lawhead is forbidden to be employed or volunteer in any capacity that would require her to manage other people's money.

Up until last summer, 69-year-old Tecopa resident Ilana Breger, plagued with an uncommon environmental illness, had depended for the past four years on Lawhead to help manage her finances. Lawhead, to whom she had given her ATM card and PIN, withdrew cash for Breger, Mottweiler says, and helped her to pay her bills. Breger, housebound and unable to access the bank account herself, never suspected that Lawhead was siphoning off her life savings at the rate of about $1,000 a month.

By the time Breger's new attorney filed a complaint with the Inyo sheriff's office, Breger's life savings were wiped out, Mottweiler says, and Lawhead had already left Tecopa. When she was contacted, Mottweiler says Lawhead issued a statement through her then attorney Hank Mosier apologizing for the theft and promising to repay the money. Hardy says Lawhead's not guilty plea is standard procedure in a criminal case.

For some Tecopa residents, the announcement of Lawhead's imminent arrest raised concerns about her position of trust with the hot springs park's financial records, since she also ran the park office for Inyo County. The county's claim that the park was operating a growing financial loss led to a controversial decision to lease the park to a private concessionaire. In the process, four county workers, including Lawhead, lost their jobs.

Inyo County Deputy Administrator Chuck Hamilton says there is no reason to believe that Lawhead had anything to do with the county's shortfall. "We do tight deposits and receipts," Hamilton said. "It's not impossible, but it's highly unlikely." The shortage, county officials maintain, was the result of high expenses and little revenue.

For other local residents, the information came as a heavy blow. "Jacque Lawhead gave more of herself to this community than the next 10 people combined," said Jennifer Viereck of the Hummingbird Family Resource Center.

The center, which vied for the concessionaire contract when the county put the hot springs park out to bid last year, was under the auspices of the Southeast Inyo Children's Council. Lawhead was a member of the volunteer board of directors of the Children's Council, as well as the local school board. "She was not only highly professional, she was compassionate, generous beyond the call and kind. Her loss is felt every day in a hundred ways."

Lawhead is rumored to have a gambling addiction that led to the theft. "Apparently, in some people, gambling can cause intense cycles of brain chemistry that are as hard to break free from as narcotics," Viereck said. "I only wish that she had not struggled with it alone, and that others had not been victimized financially. I hope she gets high-quality support, and that she remembers all the good she has done for so many in the difficult days to come."

Mottweiler confirms that there have been no other complaints or indications of wrongdoing against Lawhead. However, he said, "if she handled money for other senior citizens and they're concerned, they should contact the sheriff's department."

Deputy District Attorney Hardy said Lawhead could face up to four years in prison for the felony charges if convicted, but that she had no significant prior criminal record. A settlement conference is scheduled for Jan. 4.

Mr. Holt: Thank you for the account for the hideous and nasty bit of thievery pulled off in Pahrump last year.

However, contrary to the unspoken implication made by you in posting this, I would say that even if the woman guilty of thievery had worked for a church or private charity, her crimes still would have been shocking and disgusting, because of their nature, and because of the nature of the victims of said crimes.

One can split hair after hair after hair about cases like this, as to whether or not it would have occurred under this set of circumstances or another.

Either way, the thievery was disgusting, especially because of the vulnerabillity of the victims of said thievery, and should be punished by whatever means that fit the crime.

That said, the fact is that such news doesn't change for one second the very nature of modern capitalism, which is essentially everyone for him- or herself, and the Devil take the hindmost.

Some people can live with that sort of logic and society, but, I, for one, cannot.

There are far too many vulnerable people who need aid and succor of whatever sort that can be provided by a big, rich country like this one to allow people to starve to death, or at least come close to it, without at least some sort of reasonable explaination as to why that should be so.

It is especially shameful in an ostensibly Judeao-Christian society as this that so many Jews and Christians should knowingly and willingly violate the tenets of their respective faiths by harbouring and holding an uncharitable spirit towards the poor and downtrodden of the Earth.

Those Jews and Christians that do just that are in the same league as the Pharisees and Sadducees that Jesus denounced as being hypocrites, no????

How many American Christians and Jews over the past three centuries have died, having lived thoroughly self-centred and nasty lives, only to hope that, by some sort of last-minute act of repentance, that they would be redeemed and brought by God into Paradise?????

But, why should God redeem any of their lives, and let them into Heaven, when those sinners themselves would have, if the positions were reversed, have cast themselves into the lowest regions of Hell and have done with it.

No one, regardless of Earthly position and status, is immune from judgement, nor should they be, if what the Torah, Old and New Testaments and the Quran say is true in the slightest.

Even if what those books say isn't, there is a an almost in-born sense of right and wrong that most people live by, and that should, along with wisely and humanely crafted laws, help to try, convict and imprison the the truly nasty and guilty.

Either way, your example neither proves the notion of the inherent corruption of government agencies, nor proves that the private sector can do the job of ministering to the most vulnerable of society's members all by itself.

You will either need to find a better example, or concede the debate, which has thus far, strayed so far from its original subject, illegal immigration and its effects on American society, as to be incredibly silly.

Please, in future, kindly confine yourself to the discussion of said topic at hand, and why you feel as strongly as you do about it, or don't debate this subject in this particular part of the forum at all.

Eminent domain (from Latin dominium eminens meaning: supreme lordship) is the power of the state to appropriate private property for its own use without the owner's consent. It gives the state, and - therefore - whoever controls it, powerful, and in some countries, draconian means to redistribute private wealth among, supposedly, all members of the community or society. Although in the U.S. the exercise of eminent domain is restricted by prohibition in Fifth Amendment that "private property be taken for public use, without just compensation," the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States (see Footnote) creates a reasonable doubt about the extent to which such a restriction can withstand pre-emptive pressure mounted by eminent domain's prospective beneficiaries.

This doubt is particularly disturbing in today's America that has been a target of million man invasion of foreign (mostly, Mexican) have-nots, often referred to as "migrants," who due to their sheer numbers and exorbitant fertility rates may soon gain enough political clout to force use of eminent domain as a vehicle of involuntary transfer of property from wealthy Americans to the "migrating" hordes (in order to "improve their lives," as they say). If the present "migratory" trends continue, particularly if the taxation remains at the current levels, condemnations of private property for public housing and infrastructure that are needed to properly accommodate poor "migrants" and their countless kids may become a political necessity that no federal judge can resist. And since the term "just compensation" of the language of Fifth Amendment is equally vulnerable to court's capricious interpretation as "public use" has been, don't hold your breath if you expect to get a fair market value for your home that your city council decided to turn into an apartment complex for four families of "migrants" (and additional relatives from abroad that may wish to be "reunited" with these families).

Take, for instance, Los Angeles, not much more than just a cow town with population of few thousand in the middle of 19th century, and a megapolis inhabited by almost 4 million people and the second (after Mexico City) largest concentration of Mexicans on Earth today. US Census statistics show that slightly less than 50% of L.A.'s population, or about 1.7 million, is Hispanic (although some estimates suggest that there are as many as 2.7 millions Mexicans living in L.A.), some 1.3 million of whom have settled in the city in the last 15 years. The proportion of Hispanic (mostly Mexican) pupils in L.A. Unified School District reached the astounding 80% and is indicative of future demographic composition of the City of Angels. With poverty rates among Hispanic "migrants" and home prices soaring, it's not difficult to predict the pressure that will build to redistribute private real property among the dominating but poor Mexicans as their numbers grow. And the City Council (guess, what ethnic group will have a majority of vote there?), empowered to condemn a private property by the last week's decision of the Supreme Court, will be the least likely body to not yield to that pressure.

The above scenario is but one example of ways and means with which the "migrating" hordes can redistribute Americans' wealth among themselves. In a country that is so vulnerable to arbitrary interpretation of its constitution by five judges with political agendas of their own and ruled by a majority of vote (for which a proof of citizenship is usually not required), as the U.S. is, due enforcement of the border and immigration laws is a necessary condition for meaningful protection of liberty and property of its citizens. If the border and the immigration laws are not fully enforced, the only way for Americans to survive the mass invasion of poor but prolific "migrants," a hostile take-over if you will, and to keep their "wealth" intact, would be to abandon birth control altogether, like so many "migrants" do, and enter a spiral of exponential population growth. This would resemble the nuclear weapon race that characterized the by-gone Cold War era - a strategy that once was deemed losing for all parties involved in the race.

Wouldn't it be much better to keep the invading hordes out? The eminent domain law is one of the many reasons for resounding "Yes" to this question. It may well be the most important one.

FOOTNOTE. The term "public use" in the Fifth Amendment used to be narrowly interpreted as projects of obviously public nature such as public roads or schools, but not anymore. The 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court decided last Thursday (June 23, 2005) in Susette Kelo et al. versus City of New London et al. that a city can condemn (seize with just compensation, that is) a private property for projects that, although not obviously public, would increase city's tax revenues or boost employment. "As a result, cities now have wide power to bulldoze residences for projects such as shopping malls and hotel complexes in order to generate tax revenue" (quotation from "Supreme Court Rules Cities May Seize Homes," by Hope Yen, The Washington Post, June 23, 2005, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/23/AR2005062300783_pf.html ). Although a vast majority of critics of the Court's ruling fear that, as a result of that decision, wealthy entrepreneurs may be able to de facto evict fixed income citizens from their homes now, I see the future Marxist-style "social justice" as being more likely to use the ruling as a precedent. If generating tax revenue or boosting employment is enough for condemnation why would one expect that cheap housing for poor "migrant" workers and their families is not? Just remember that out of five justices that were in favor of the ruling, four (Ginsburg, Stevens, Breyer and Souter) concurred with Al Gore in Florida recount controversy in 2000, and one (Kennedy) was a notorious swing vote that often sided with the liberal faction of the Court.

Until World War I, crossing the border was easy and people entering from Mexico could do so legally. When US economic growth created a need for workers, Mexican immigrants were welcomed. But during the Great Depression of the 1930s, hundreds of thousands of people of Mexican descent were ''repatriated'' to Mexico even though more than half were US citizens. During the Second World War, Mexican workers were again welcomed, to meet labour shortages. But in the 1950s, the Federal Government launched ''Operation Wetback'' to expel Mexicans from the United States. Once again, many US citizens were forced to leave their country of birth. More than a million people were expelled in 1954 alone; many were denied hearings and thus US citizens were denied their constitutional rights.

Former Klansman Daniel Schertz, a 27-year-old from the southeast Tennessee town of South Pittsburg, was indicted in June on charges of building pipe bombs to kill Hispanic immigrants.

Imperial Wizard Billy Jeffery of the North Georgia White Knights denied any connection to the bomb plot and said he banished Schertz from the group, but he readily admits he isn't happy with the flow of immigrants to the region.

"The blacks fought for their civil rights. These illegal immigrants are coming in here and having everything just handed to them," Jeffery said.

Advocates say there are no precise statistics on hate crimes against Hispanics. Victims don't always call the police because of their precarious immigration status.

"People feel they will not be protected, and they are risking deportation," said John Bernstein, director of federal policy at the National Immigration Law Center in Washington. "That is more and more a problem with hate crimes."

Hate crimes against Hispanic immigrants have been common in other parts of the country, but Southern states saw their Hispanic populations boom in the 1990s. Arkansas' Hispanic population rose by 337 percent during the decade, Georgia's by 300 percent, Tennessee's by 278 percent and South Carolina's by 211 percent.

One of the first signs of organized anti-Hispanic activity in the South occurred in Gainesville, Ga., in 1998, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama group that tracks hate crimes.

The American Knights of the KKK held a rally on Hall County Courthouse steps, followed by a cross-burning in nearby Winder. A few years later, in 2001, the nation's largest neo-nazi organization, the National Alliance, staged a rally in Hall County.

Santos Aguilar of the Alianza Del Pueblo, an advocacy center for immigrants in Knoxville, said he believes the number of hate groups taking aim at immigrants continues to grow.

"The majority of the crimes are not reported to the law enforcement agencies," he said.

While a member of the North Georgia White Knights, Schertz was caught by an undercover federal agent and a confidential informant. Court records show he took them shopping for bomb materials at a home improvement store.

"Once at Lowe's, Schertz picked out five end caps and some silicone for the pipe bombs he was making," the agent's affidavit says. He then explained how to wire the explosives.

After returning to a shed at his home, Schertz gave instructions "down to the proper order of laying gun powder and shrapnel material." He made five pipe bombs and sold them for $750, records show.

Schertz is charged with teaching and demonstrating how to make a weapon of mass destruction and interstate transport of explosive material with intent to kill or injure. He is being held without bond.

Schertz's attorney, Mike Caputo, declined to comment on the charges, but said he was working on a plea agreement. He said Schertz is a military veteran and has no previous criminal record.

His Klan leader, Jeffery, said Schertz was thrown out of the Klan for unrelated disobedience in mid-May — weeks after the alleged bomb making and selling in April.

"We kicked him out for breaking his oath that he swore before God," Jeffery, 43, said in a telephone interview. "We are not a violence-making group, and we don't believe in that. This isn't the '50s and '60s."

Federal agents say hate groups always deny involvement when one of their members is charged with a crime.

"There are always a percentage of these people who are ready, willing and able to go off," said James M. Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Nashville field division.

Cavanaugh said that "when the group burns the cross, worships under the swastika, you dehumanize the people ... that has been a plague on the world for centuries."

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Report counted 762 active hate groups in the United States in 2004. South Carolina had the most, with 47, and Tennessee had the most Klan chapters, with 13.

David Lubell, director of the Nashville-based Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, said the Schertz case shows how supremacist talk can prompt violence.

"It is what happened in the civil rights movement. All of a sudden it is acceptable to incite hatred of immigrants, whether Latino, or from Africa, or Asia or wherever," he said.

Lubell said "usually it is a lone wolf kind of person who listens to these messages and acts on them ... This is just a symptom of what has been anti-immigrant sentiment, much more freely used by radio talk show hosts, anti-immigrant groups and even politicians."

The rate of terror attacks worldwide has tripled since 9/11, so the world is no safer. No one has "won the war but lost the peace" in Iraq -- one of the most Orwellian phrases imaginable, repeated like a drunken mantra to sustain denial about the reality of Iraq. The US armed forces are already having trouble meeting their recruiting goals. There was a recent article in The Nation about how actively they are recruiting Latinos. "Twenty-first century history is not one of my strong points--too depressing." -- Bashir

Simply put, "Past Tense I" is one of the best episodes of the series. It works terrifically as a refreshing time-travel story (the first for DS9) as well as a provocative allegory, characterized by heaps of brilliantly realized character moments. Sophomore director Reza Badiyi gets a chance to shine two months after helming the relatively pedestrian "Civil Defense."

A transporter mishap sends Sisko, Bashir and Dax centuries into the past to a point in time just days before a violent incident that will lead to a turning point in Earth's history. Now they must find a way back to the 24th century, being sure to avoid disrupting the time-line while in the past.

Sisko and Bashir wake up on the streets of San Francisco in the year 2024, finding themselves separated from Dax. Caught by the police without ID, the two are placed in a "sanctuary district"--an isolated section of the city composed of thousands of homeless, jobless, poverty-stricken citizens.

Before long, Sisko, an avid history buff, realizes that he and Bashir have landed just days before the infamous Bell Riots--one of the most violent civil disturbances in American history, scheduled to unfold within the very sanctuary district where the two have become prisoners. History states the event begins with district residents taking hostages at the processing center. It ends with armed forces killing hundreds of innocent people in an attempt to secure the situation as it turns into a rally. A man named Gabriel Bell plays a pivotal part in the incident by sacrificing himself to ensure the safety of the hostages [VERY KEY--WHY DO YOU THINK PHASERS HAVE STUN SETTINGS?]. Sisko tells Bashir the incident will cause public outrage of the nation's condition and a major step forward to solving Earth's social problems.

Brooks and El Fadil both deliver memorable performances, and the pairing of their characters provides a poignant subtext: Sisko as the wise teacher from a future that remembers its past, and Bashir as the student whose eyes are opened to grim, depressing history for the first time.

When the two have an unexpected confrontation with street thug B.C. (Frank Military), a fight leads Gabriel Bell to intervene. B.C. kills him in the brawl, thus altering the future. Without Bell to save the hostages and take his proper role in history, Sisko realizes that it is imperative he and Bashir make sure history unfolds as it should. When B.C. takes the hostages in the episode's closing minutes, Sisko decides he must take Bell's place in history even if it means sacrificing himself in the process.

The most notable aspect of "Past Tense I" is how it affects Sisko's character. It's nothing short of a breakthrough as the writers put him into an extremely volatile situation and allow him to make monumental decisions. The results are Sisko's best actions yet as DS9's leader and hero. This is the Sisko that's been in the making for two years now. Sisko's decision to take Bell's place is an act of heroism that deserves to go down in Trek history right along with Kirk's saving of Earth in Star Trek IV.

And as a social commentary, the episode is intelligent and effective. Set in what we would call the near future, homelessness and economic problems [HOW DID YOU PUT IT, KEV? "jobs Americans won't do"?] have escalated to the point where the urban unemployed are merely shoved into these districts (prisons would be a better description) where the government and more fortunate can simply forget they exist. Some gritty production design and interesting photography set the tone, turning a few city locations into a fairly convincing reality.

In addition, the B-story is sensible and subtle, characterized by some details that make a difference. Dax is found unconscious by communications executive Chris Brynner (Jim Metzler), who gives her access to a terminal she quickly uses to establish a proper 21st century identity. It's interesting how Dax winds up with people on the opposite end of the economic scale (Brynner is a multi-millionaire who hosts upscale business parties). Dax has a discussion with some of Brynner's snobbish friends [CAFE ROMA, VEGAS] that reveals the general public's uncaring attitude on the sanctuaries--one party guest dismisses them as "the only way to keep those people off the streets." Brynner comments that the sanctuaries exist solely for the residents' benefit, but he can't offer an answer when Dax asks why there is a wall around it.

Resembling The Original Series episode "City on the Edge of Forever" in many respects, this installment redelivers the poignant nature of the concept and remains true to the idea (with exception to the obligatory '90s Trek time-travel technobabble). Delivering on-target drama while keeping every element of the plot in sync, "Past Tense I" is a season highlight.

En route to a symposium in San Francisco, Sisko, Dax and Bashir are lost during transport to Earth from the Defiant. The trio materializes in San Francisco, but in the year 2024 [as opposed to WHEN they're from, the far more enlightened year 2371]. Apprehended by a pair of policemen, Sisko and Bashir are taken to a "Sanctuary District" - a gated area of the city where homeless, mentally ill and unemployed people are locked away from the rest of society.

Separated from the others, Dax is found by a prominent businessman named Chris Brynner, who takes her to his office and helps her obtain the ID card necessary to exist in this society. Dax doesn't reveal where she comes from, but tells him that her friends are missing. Meanwhile, in the Sanctuary District, Sisko and Bashir are taken to a processing center, where no records of their existence are found. Sisko learns the date and realizes that they have arrived just days before a crucial event in history, the Bell Riots, which occurred in the area of the city where he and Bashir are now confined.

Sisko tells Bashir that residents in the District will take hostages, but a man named Gabriel Bell, after whom the riots were named, will sacrifice his life to save them. Hundreds of innocent people will be killed during the riots, but Sisko and Bashir can do nothing, or this pivotal moment in history, which led to sweeping social reforms, could be altered forever. Later, Sisko and Bashir are given ration cards to obtain meals and sent out to find a place to sleep among the abandoned buildings.

On the Defiant, Kira, Odo and O'Brien realize their comrades were transported back in time, but cannot pinpoint the exact date, and have only a limited number of search attempts they can make. In the Sanctuary District, Sisko and Bashir meet Webb, a homeless but proud man who asks them to try and help the community, but they must refuse his request in order to avoid any contact that could change history. Later, Sisko and Bashir end up in a scuffle over Bashir's food card, during which a bystander who steps in to help is killed. Sisko is shocked to discover the dead man is Gabriel Bell.

When Kira attempts to contact Earth to discuss the situation, she learns that everything connected with Starfleet has vanished. Odo, O'Brien and Kira realize their missing crewmates have altered history, and that the Defiant is all that remains of the Federation [AMAZING HOW MUCH OF AN EFFECT ONE BLACK MAN CAN HAVE, HUH?]. Back in the past, Chris Brynner does some research and learns that Jadzia's friends are among the thousands of people behind the walls of the Sanctuary District. Meanwhile, Sisko and Bashir realize that they must step in to undo the damage to history resulting from Bell's death. They arrive at the processing center just as the residents take hostages. As the riots begin, Sisko joins the aggressors, identifying himself as Gabriel Bell.

Sisko, posing as Gabriel Bell of the 21st century, takes charge of the hostage situation in the Processing Center as rioting begins within the Sanctuary District, and tells the angry residents that this is their chance to voice their grievances. Bashir reminds him that Bell is destined to die at the end of this turning point in Earth history. On the outside, Dax realizes that Sisko and Bashir are in danger and prepares to locate them. Meanwhile, Kira and O'Brien attempt transporting into different time periods to find their friends, with no success. Back in the center, Sisko convinces Webb, a decent family man, to act as their representative, but Webb is cut off from the computer interface terminal when he tries to communicate their plight. Then, police Detective Preston contacts Webb and asks to meet him.

Sisko joins Webb for the meeting, where they demand that all Sanctuary Districts be closed and the Federal Employment Act reinstated, and Preston agrees to present their demands to the Governor. Preston is later met by Chris and Dax, who can't convince the official to help them locate Sisko and Bashir. Determined, Dax waits until they aren't looking and slips away.

Kira and O'Brien transport once more into the past, but again choose the wrong time period. Meanwhile, as the riots continue, Preston offers to reduce the charges against Sisko and Webb if they release the hostages, but the two refuse to back down from their demands. Later, Dax is brought to the center, her combadge taken after having been captured upon entering the Sanctuary District.

Dax plays along with Sisko and Bashir, then tells them she can convince Chris to restore the group's computer access. After recovering her missing combadge, Dax slips back into the outside world. Soon, scores of residents are telling their stories to millions of people over the computer interface. Unfortunately, the Governor is unmoved, and tells Detective Preston to send in her troops.

Kira and O'Brien transport to the correct time period and soon locate Dax. Meanwhile, Sisko and Webb herd the hostages into a safe area of the center, just before a SWAT team bursts in, killing Webb and most of the others. One of the officers accidentally shoots at a hostage, but Sisko jumps in front of the man and takes a bullet to the shoulder. As the SWAT team leaves the center and National Guard personnel take control of the Sanctuary District, Sisko and Bashir are allowed to leave, and their ID cards are switched with those of two dead men. The former hostages promise to tell what really happened, and Sisko and Bashir return to the future, having restored history to its normal course.

Now that the rationale provided by Bush & Co. for attacking Iraq is unraveling, it's time to ask what the true motivation was for the rush to war. Many dismissed the signs of antiwar protestors, which read "No blood for oil." But if we connect the oily fingerprints, beginning with Vice President Dick Cheney's, it appears those protestors were right.

On Monday, I was at Guantánamo Bay to meet with Jumah Al Dossari, one of the detainees my firm represents [SEE TANGREDI? LAWYERS CAN BE HEROES]. As always, I spent the first few hours of our meeting trying to convince Jumah to fight the desperation and hopelessness that threaten what little spirit he has left [WHY STAR TREK IS SO IMPORTANT] ... I walked slowly back to the room where Jumah sat shackled. I wondered if there was a good way to tell a suicidal man that all three branches of our government appear content to let him rot at Guantánamo. Nothing came to mind. Maybe I shouldn’t have worried. Jumah’s reaction to bad legal news has become as muted as his emotions generally. He long ago stopped believing that a court will ever hear his case and thinks I’m naive for hoping otherwise. Instead, Jumah believes that he has been condemned to live forever on an island where there is no law. He may well be right.
