Official Press Release: ACLU to take Homeless Advocacy case to Federal Court

LAS VEGAS, NV - The American Civil Liberties Union has scheduled a press conference for Monday, June 12, 2006 at 11 AM to be held at Huntridge Circle Park, 1251 S. Maryland Parkway between E. Charleston and E. Saint Louis.

On February 19, 2006 local homeless rights advocates Gail Sacco and Lyla Bartholomae were given citations for feeding the homeless (a gathering over 25 people) without a permit. The women were sharing food at Huntridge Circle Park where there have been daily picnics since August 2005. They were also told by park marshals they were "86'd" from the park for 6 months- and they would be arrested on sight if they returned.

Representatives from the ACLU will announce and explain the upcoming lawsuit challenging the Las Vegas ordinance in federal court.

The plaintiffs include Gail Sacco, Lyla Bartholomae, Food Not Bombs, Joe Sacco, John Brown, Southern NV Advocates for Homeless People (SNAHP) and the Catholic Worker. Several plaintiffs will speak which will be followed by questions from reporters.

No interviews will be held before the press conference.

For more information, please call Gary Peck at 702 262-5613 or Gail Sacco at 702- 355-2764.

Thank you to all of you who came down to support us.

Thank you for all who couldn't make it down to the park but kept us in your thoughts anyway.

And thank you to all of you who have been helping us all along. We couldn't be successful without you.

take responsibility for yourself

if you would stop enablling the homeless, they might actually be forced to do something for themselves. everyone falls on hard times. stop coddling. i'm sure they all have sad stories, who doesn't. if someone was bringing me food to eat everyday, i may not want to support myself either. enough already!

First, not everyone falls on hard times. Some folks have what we intellectuals call white skin privilege. Also too, there are those who're simply rich as fuck ...

http://coanews.org/tiki-read_article.php?articleId=1407

According to ABC News, in 2005, "Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits. Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 billion, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes."

... now maybe you can quit waving that fucking flag from that pickup truck long enough to explain what hard times has Lee Raymond fallen on? The only thing sad about Raymond's story is how it probably won't ever occur to his ass to SHARE some of that money! You DO remember the word SHARE, don't you? They brought it up often enough on Sesame Street ...

"forced to do something for themselves" I love that line--reminds me that Big Business Equals Big Brother, because they both FORCE a motherfucker into doin' shit!

"if someone was bringing me food to eat everyday, i may not want to support myself either" REALLY? So all those times in which patriarchy dictated that a wife should have dinner on the table at six for their husbands have kept said husbands from supporting anyone (obviously not, but if you don't expose how ILlogical the right-wing is, it'll never be defeated--how many CENTURIES did SLAVERY last)? OK, then all the housewives in the world need to quit cooking for their husbands, least those husbands wind up dependent!! Organize a boycott, ladies! We can't have those men become a bunch of lazy bums, can we?

The Black Panthers knew that a hungry child could not learn, so they had free breakfast programs (before, of course, the Panthers were wiped out like the Jedi--Order 66 Equals Cointelpro). Likewise, you feed the homeless because it's not like a boss will buy you lunch during a job interview! IT TAKES A MONTH OR SO BEFORE YOU GET YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK EVEN IF YO' ASS DOES GET HIRED! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO EAT WHILE YOU'RE WAITING FOR THAT CHECK? BOOTSTRAPS? The reason why the name of the game is fame is because I shouldn't have to repeat myself this much (one shot on Oprah would do the trick, except if I'm Robin Hood, she's the Sheriff of goddamn Nottingham), but we the people need a Greenpeace version of FDR's New Deal; an eco-friendly jobs program. But since the only way you can afford such a program is to tax the rich and cut the military--and since ignant-ass white boys like John Barnes here would just fall apart if his dreams of waking up rich or playing G.I. Joe against fill-in-the-blank were to go the way of the DoDo Bird--we're unfortunately a ways off from such a program (ask the Democrats why they passed up Kucinich for Kerry and you'll see what I mean). You're so fucking concerned with the homeless being lazy, Johnny boy? HIRE them! CaN'T AFFORD to hire them? Well, welcome to my world ...

Life Stinks (1991)
Written/Directed by Mel Brooks

Plot Outline: A filthy rich businessman bets a corporate rival that he can live on the streets of L.A. without the comforts of home or money, which proves to be tougher than he thought.

... finally, yo' ass need to take the Mel Brooks challenge. Put them damn videogames down, leave the safety of the suburbs and go down to Circle Park. Live amongst the homeless, talk to them, sleep alongside of them. Get yo' ass beat by a fucking pig (God forbid) if/whenever they do ... THEN AND ONLY THEN will you be in a position to talk shit. Otherwise, shut the fuck up!
